"The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings."

-Masanobu Fukuoka

Hannah came to the ranch to "See the chickens" and left with a lesson in shearing sheep!

Firefly Fields Youth Ranch is about more than just being a fun place for kids to hang out and ride horse. Sure, some children that come out may choose to ride.. They might even learn how to properly tack up a horse, or lope for the first time ever! But we also aim to teach them so much more than that!

We teach the kids that come out to the ranch how to be responsible for caring for animals. We teach them to be compassionate to hurting creatures. We teach them to work hard, and that the things worth having in life rarely come easily. We try to teach them that life always contains loss and set backs, but that at the end of the day it's all in God's hands. And we try to teach them about the circle of life and how everything has purpose...Whether that be the feeder pig that'll bless families with its harvest...The veggies in our garden that fill our bellies... The apples that fall from our apple trees that make for a delicious Dutch Apple pie or treat for the horses... Or the wool that we get from our sheep.

We love sharing our passion for animals and agriculture with everyone that comes to visit us. We know that for many kids that visit us, this might be their only opportunity to experience farm life and all of the amazing life lessons it holds. It might be their only experience planting a food item with their own hands. It might be their only chance to help build a new structure or treat a wound on an animal.

We know that God designed horses with an amazing ability to show us His love and teach us life lessons... and we will always use them for that. But we will also use other animals and circumstances to do that too; because we are so much more than just a place to ride horse.

"I came here to see the chickens." -Hannah, 20
